In 1794, in the Arctic Sea, Captain Robert Walton (Aidan Quinn) is a man obsessed with reaching the North Pole, pushing his crew to exhaustion. When his ship hits an iceberg, it is stranded in the ice. Out of the blue, Captain Walton and his men hear a terrible cry. In the far distance, a stranger is coming toward the ship. He introduces himself as Victor Frankenstein (Branagh) and begins telling his extraordinary life story.

The film was nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Makeup, and a BAFTA for Best Production Design (Tim Harvey). It was also nominated for several Saturn Awards including Best Horror Film. Roger Pratt was nominated for Best Cinematography by the British Society of Cinematographers.
